Great Lakes Recovery Centers, in partnership with Project WEAVE and NMU’s Health Promotion Office, will be hosting an advanced public viewing of the HBO special ADDICTION at Northern Michigan University on Wednesday, March 14th, at 6:30pm in room 102 of Jamrich Hall.
This event is free to the public and will include a discussion with local experts on the HBO special and substance abuse in our community.
While it is generally accepted that one in ten people will be affected by their own substance use or abuse, many do not know that one in four people, including one in four members in our community, is affected by someone else?€™s substance use and/or abuse, making this issue a concern for the entire Upper Peninsula.
GLRC, the largest substance abuse provider in the U.P., and Project WEAVE, one of 10 Reclaiming Future projects funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, along with Northern Michigan University, were granted the rights to show the advanced special by HBO. Marquette was chosen as one of only two cities in Michigan and a limited number of sites around the country to premiere this ground breaking special. The 90-minute documentary on substance abuse addiction is the centerpiece of a 14 part series on addiction that will air from March 15-30. This local premiere coincides with a larger national multi-platform campaign to educate Americans about the advancements in the understanding of drug and alcohol addiction and it’s treatment as a brain disease.
